10 Electrical Safety Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

Introduction

Electrical safety at home is not complicated, but it is easy to let slide. Almost all of it comes down to a handful of habits that take no time once they become routine.

The First Five

These are the ones that prevent the majority of incidents we are called out to.

  • Test your GFCI outlets monthly. Press test, confirm the power cuts, press reset. A GFCI that fails this test is not protecting anything.
  • Match the bulb to the fitting. Exceeding the rated wattage overheats the fixture and degrades the wiring inside it.
  • Keep water away from outlets. That includes vases on shelves above them and appliances near sinks.
  • Never remove a grounding pin. If a plug will not fit, the outlet is the problem, not the plug.
  • Unplug by the plug, not the cord. Pulling on the cord damages the connection where you cannot see it.

Around Children

Tamper-resistant outlets are now standard in new work and can be retrofitted cheaply. They are more effective than plug-in caps, which get removed and then left off.

Keep cords out of reach and behind furniture where possible, and teach children early that outlets are not toys rather than relying on physical barriers alone.

The Next Five

Less obvious, equally worth doing.

  • Check cords for damage. Fraying, stiffness and cracked insulation all mean replace, not tape.
  • Do not overload power strips. A strip does not add capacity, it only adds sockets.
  • Know where your panel is. Everyone in the house should be able to find and open it in the dark.
  • Label your breakers. Guessing during an emergency wastes the time that matters most.
  • Schedule a periodic inspection. Every few years for most homes, sooner for older properties.

What to Do in an Emergency

If someone is in contact with a live source, do not touch them. Cut power at the panel first, or use something non-conductive to separate them from the source.

  • Keep a Class C extinguisher accessible
  • Evacuate first, investigate afterwards
